Parish Church of San Giacomo

The parish church of San Giacomo, built in 1960 on the site of the former church of the same name, overlooks the main square of the village.

The church is dedicated to one of the twelve apostles, James son of Zebedee, later known as James the Greater to distinguish him from the other apostle of the same name, James son of Alphaeus.

Simple and solid in appearance, the church was rebuilt after World War II. Inside, it houses a unique work of art: the "Fanciulla di Noragugume", a delicate wooden statuette depicting a young woman in traditional Sardinian dress, resting on a funeral catafalque adorned with motifs inspired by Sardinian folk craftsmanship. It is considered a funerary monument of rare emotional depth.

In 2021, the sculpture was attributed to Francesco Ciusa, the renowned sculptor from Nuoro, and is seen as a tribute to the famous funerary monument of Ilaria del Carretto by Jacopo della Quercia, created in the early 15th century.

The Feast of Saint James the Apostle, Noragugume’s patronal festival, is celebrated every year on July 25th.
