Church of Beata Vergine d'Itria

In the heart of Noragugume, in Piazza IV Novembre, stands the Church of the Blessed Virgin of Itria—an authentic gem of Gothic-Catalan architecture.

Built in 1620 and restored in 1985, the church is recognizable by its rectangular red stone façade, arched portal, and distinctive bell gable.

The interior, with a single nave, houses a fine wooden retablo, featuring the statue of the Madonna of Itria in the central niche. The church also preserves side altars in polychrome wood and 17th-century wooden statues from the Spanish school.

According to tradition, it was built by a devout pilgrim nun known as Sa Monza Santa, whose remains were discovered during restoration work.

The Feast of the Madonna of Itria, celebrated on Pentecost Tuesday, is linked to an ancient tradition: a galloping horse race that originated when the village was divided into districts, each represented by a rider competing to win the Virgin’s banner.
